Sunday wind-down: live music, Cirque, and the 401 mess

Mostly cloudy and mild out there—16°C, so bring a layer if you're heading out after dark. Sun's down by 9:09 PM, which gives you a solid 13-plus hours to work with. UV's sitting at 3, so nothing crazy, but still worth the SPF if you're spending the afternoon outside.

If you're driving the 401, know that the Gardiner corridor is a bit of a zoo this morning. There's a collision on the eastbound express at McCowan with two right lanes down, and a couple of disabled vehicles creating backups on both the eastbound and westbound sides—one at the 404, another near Allen, and another at the Jane transfer. Nothing permanent, but budget extra time if you're heading that way.

On the local news side: a person was killed following a police shooting in North York near Wilson and King High avenues. The CPKC signal workers' strike that's been dragging on for months just wrapped up, and binding arbitration starts Monday. And there's a march planned for Saturday to remember Kaleym Davy, the 19-year-old killed in a Mississauga police shooting. In September, Ontario schools are rolling out new grading rules and adding financial literacy to the curriculum—worth knowing if you've got kids heading back.

For food, if you're thinking dinner, there's a solid run of hot dog spots worth a detour if you haven't hit them yet—everything from loaded danger dogs to Chilean-style completos. If you want something fancier without dropping a ton of cash, there are six Toronto restaurants doing tasting menus under $100. And if you're feeling experimental, the CNE opens Friday with some genuinely chaotic deep-fried stuff: Brie Oreos, wasabi sweetcorn lemonade, lobster sticks, butter chicken taquitos, KD smoothies, pickle cheesecake—go judge for yourself.

For the evening, you've got options. TFC takes on FC Supra at York Lions Stadium at 4:00 PM if you want to catch some footy. Music-wise, Jimmy Eat World and PUP are playing RBC Amphitheatre at 6:00 PM—solid lineup if you're into that. Cirque du Soleil's Luzia is running under the big top at 5:00 PM, which hits different in that setting. There's also stuff happening at Cherry Beach and the Geary Avenue Warehouse Project at 4:00 PM if you want to check what's on.

If you're sleeping in, Casa Loma's got the Breathtaking Gardens exhibition from Soul Expansion at 9:00 AM and regular admission at 9:30 AM. It's a good excuse to spend a Sunday morning up the Annex way.

Make it a good one.
