TIFF Season, Decent Weather, a Few Roads to Dodge

Morning. It's 13 degrees and mostly cloudy, so you've got enough daylight to get out and do something, but bring a layer. The UV's sitting at 6—high—so if you're planning anything outdoors, don't sleep on sunscreen even if the sun's playing peek-a-boo.

A couple of road notes before you head anywhere: there's a collision on the 401 westbound express near the 404 that's got both shoulders and two lanes shut down, so if you're heading that way, give yourself extra time or find another route. The 501 Queen is detoured eastbound—they're sending you via Broadview, Gerrard East, and Coxwell because of a blocked track. Don Valley Parkway north beyond Don Mills is also rough. Nothing that kills a Sunday, but worth knowing.

On the local front: Kyle Lowry got Toronto's highest honour at Jurassic Park yesterday—a proper send-off for a guy who meant everything to this city. Also worth knowing: ILAC, Canada's largest language school, just shut down and left 1,362 students in the lurch, which is rough. And if you've been following the crime beat, Toronto police are looking for a suspect in a hate-motivated assault at Yonge and Sheppard, plus there's a woman wanted for over 40 vehicle break-ins across Sauga that's connected to a bigger crime wave.

Food-wise, there's actual stuff happening. Chef Nick Liu just opened Woodlyns at Bathurst and Eglinton—it's Chinese-Jewish fusion, which is a sick concept. If you're in North York this week, Tous Les Jours is opening their first Canadian spot at H Mart. And if you're feeling fancy, there are some wild TIFF dining experiences pushing past $200 a plate, all the way up to $8,888 if you're really going for it. Jake Skakun, Master of Wine, also just shared his favourite west-end spots, and there's a whole crew of new Japanese restaurants on the radar.

TIFF is in full swing, so that's the vibe. If you want to catch a film, there's everything running from 9 AM through the evening—Gentle Monster's starting early, and the evening's got screenings like Elsinore, Lemonade, and the People's Choice Award Winner on deck. Before the sun goes down at 7:19, you could hit Casa Loma or snap a walk at one of the beaches, then catch something at Scotiabank or the Lightbox after. The New York Liberty are taking on Toronto Tempo at Coca-Cola Coliseum at 3 PM if you want live sports instead.
