Sunday in the 6ix: brunch, a little rain-free sun, and a loud night ahead
Cool, bright and made for a slow weekend outing, with a full card of music and theatre tonight.
Morning, T.O. It's a cool 6°C out there this Sunday, partly cloudy with a UV index of 3, so a jacket and a sunglasses-in-the-pocket situation is about right. The sun sets at 5:09 PM, which gives you roughly ten hours of daylight to work with, so plan the big outdoor stuff for the afternoon and keep the evening for the indoor rooms. Bundle up if you're heading down to the lake or walking the Beaches boardwalk, because that breeze will bite.
If you're driving today, the usual weekend traffic is lighter, but keep an eye on the Gardiner west beyond Spadina Avenue and the Don Valley Parkway north beyond Eglinton Avenue East, both of which have closures in place. The Allen Road ramp at Lawrence north of William R. Allen Road is also affected. Give yourself a few extra minutes or take transit if you can, since the Rocket and the streetcars will get you where you're going without the detours.
On the local front, Brampton's first accessible Halloween village is drawing crowds to the Paul Palleschi Rec Centre, which is a great family outing if you're out in the 905. Closer to home, police say a woman was seriously injured in a stabbing in North York and the suspect died at the scene, so stay aware of your surroundings and check in with family if you have people in that area. Over in Brampton, a motorcyclist was seriously hurt in a crash at Financial Drive and Derry Road, so if you're riding, take it easy on that stretch.
For a bite, Queen West's The Dirty Laundry is rolling out its Dirttty Little Xmas pop-up this November, which is a fun excuse to wander down the strip. Jacobs & Co. Steakhouse is also hosting Hawksmoor for a three-night collaboration dinner, so if you've been waiting for a splurge, that's your spot. And if you're in the mood for something sweet, Chapman's pecan butter tart ice cream just picked up an international best ice cream award, which is about as on-brand as Toronto dessert gets.
The afternoon has a bit of everything. Loreena McKennitt is playing Massey Hall at 1:30 PM, and if you want something more playful, the Día de los Muertos Drag Brunch at LIVE Restaurant in the Living Arts Centre starts at 11:00 AM. Casa Loma opens its general admission at 9:30 AM if you want to explore the castle before the crowds build. Hockey fans, the Windsor Spitfires are in town to face the Brampton Steelheads at CAA Centre at 2:00 PM.
Tonight is loud. Arch Enemy and The Black Dahlia Murder take over The Danforth Music Hall, with doors around 5:00 PM and the show at 6:00 PM for the 19+ crowd. Nekrogoblikon's 20th anniversary show with special guests Aborted lands at The Opera House at 6:00 PM, and if you want theatre instead, TIFA's East West Street: A Song of Good and Evil is on at The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres at 5:00 PM. Whichever way you go, the Sunday night crowd is ready to make some noise.
Enjoy the sun while it lasts and have a good one, T.O.
