Mild Wednesday in the 6ix — a good day to be outside
Clear skies and 14 degrees, a few transit snags to plan around, and some good places to spend tonight.
Morning, T.O. It's a mild one for November, 14 degrees under mainly clear skies, so this is the kind of Wednesday where you can leave the heavy parka by the door and just grab a light jacket. UV is sitting at 3, which is moderate, so sunglasses on the walk to the subway are plenty. Daylight runs out at 5:05 this evening, so if you're heading out after work, the sun will be down before you know it, and you'll want to plan the walk home accordingly.
On the getting-around front, the subway has mostly sorted itself out. Line 1 Yonge-University is back to regular service both southbound at Queen's Park and between Lawrence West and St Andrew, so the main spine should be behaving. The 301 Queen streetcar is the one to watch. There's a security-related delay near Queen Street East at Leslie, and eastbound riders are being detoured via Church, Dundas East, Broadview and Gerrard East while crews respond to a medical emergency. Give yourself some extra time on that route, or consider walking a stretch if you're in a hurry. There's also a closure on Shuter Street, 7 metres west of Victoria Street Lane to Victoria, so if you normally cut through there, go around.
For what's making the rounds, the one that's got people talking is an Australian comedian's viral reaction to the Nations Experience store here in the city, which is a fun bit of outside eyes on our town. Delivery drivers are also pushing app companies for fair pay and safer conditions, a conversation that's been building and that a lot of people in the city have a stake in. And if you're a Toys "R" Us nostalgic, the brand is coming back as departments inside Staples, starting with a pilot in Richmond Hill. Lily Rosenberg is using wrestling to push back on Down syndrome stereotypes, which is worth a look if you catch her name.
For eating, Nazem Kadri's $91 Wagyu sandwich lands at ANIML on November 10 if you want to start planning a splurge. Sahni, the Vikram Vij spot, is coming to the Union Hotel in the Financial District, and The Dirty Laundry on Queen West is turning into a Dirttty Little Xmas pop-up this month. McDonald's also rolled out frosted cranberry and cookie butter drinks nationwide on November 3, if you're in a sweet-drink mood on the way to work.
Tonight there's live music all over town, rock, hip-hop, folk and indie, so pick a room and go. Vince Staples is at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre at 7, Geese are at History Toronto at 7, Weston Estate is at the Mod Club at 7, and BRIAR's Aeterna Memoria tour is at Monarch Tavern also at 7. Earlier in the day, Casa Loma has general admission from 9:30 AM if you're bringing the out-of-town cousins, and the matinee crowd can catch Operation Mincemeat or Rumours of Fleetwood Mac at 1:30 at the Royal Alexandra and Ed Mirvish. With the weather this mild, anything that happens outdoors is a good bet today.
Enjoy the mild air, mind the 301, and get home before the sun does. See you out there.
