Mona Awad's dark campus novel about an actor-turned-drama-coach trying to stage a little-loved Shakespeare comedy is headed to the stage. Tickets start at $59 for the run at the Guloien Theatre, which opens with a preview on Nov. 24 and runs until Dec. 27.
Maev Beaty, a Stratford regular, plays Miranda Fitch, the prickly protagonist who is living with chronic pain after a debilitating stage accident. Fitch is determined to put on All's Well That Ends Well, a play Shakespeare scholars call a "problem play," even though her cast would rather be doing Macbeth.
Erin Shields, a Governor General's Award-winning playwright, adapted the novel. She called the process a "thrilling and mischievous journey." The ensemble includes Sturla Alvsvåg, Danté Prince, Bella Reyes, Khadijah Roberts-Abdullah, Rick Roberts, Amélia Sargisson and David Storch.
Awad's novel was a national bestseller, and her earlier MFA satire Bunny drew international attention. Margaret Atwood called her the "literary heir apparent" in 2023.
The production is a co-production between Crow's Theatre and Soulpepper.
