New book on Louis Kahn's drawings reveals the architect's creative process

A newly published collection of Louis Kahn's architectural drawings offers rare insight into how the legendary architect used sketching as the core of his creative practice, not merely as preparatory work for finished buildings.

Edited by Michael Merrill and published by Lars Müller Publishers in 2024, "Louis Kahn: The Importance of a Drawing" presents hundreds of reproductions spanning Kahn's career—from quick observational sketches to carefully developed studies. The 512-page cloth-bound volume measures 12 by 9.5 inches, allowing for large-format reproduction of Kahn's drawings in rich detail.

The book argues that drawing was central to Kahn's intellectual development and method. Throughout his career, Kahn filled notebooks with observations of landscapes, ruins, urban spaces, and architectural details. These were not polished artworks but explorations of form, light, proportion, and spatial relationships—a means of inquiry and discovery that directly shaped his most celebrated buildings.
