Toronto's summer has brought with it something nearly as important as the heat itself: a huge influx of new ice cream and gelato shops.

Cloudberry on Danforth has already made a splash, serving dairy-free Dole Whip swirls in rotating fruit flavours—cherry, watermelon, mango, and dragonfruit among them. For those after traditional dairy, Brokn Milk, which opened across the street from Christie Pits in early July, sources its dairy from Ontario farms and offers an impressive rotating menu of unique flavours: palm sugar and cookie butter gelato made with Biscoff cookies have already appeared in the lineup.

The frozen Greek yogurt trend that went viral south of the border arrived in Toronto in late June with Kela in Midtown. The shop produces thick, tart swirls from Ontario kefir—something like ice cream's healthier cousin, though no less tasty.

Ossington has also expanded its frozen-treat options. Bang Bang continues to draw crowds, but the strip now has Cherry on Top Gelato, perched at the corner of Dundas and Ossington in a crimson storefront, serving scoops alongside coffee and pastries. Disco Ice Cream and Cookies has also returned after a year-long hiatus, setting up shop on Ossington just north of Dundas West.

Over in Scarborough, Bodega by City Cottage Market has welcomed Brett's, a staple shop that has set up a cute outpost in the driveway.

More are still coming. Chefs Jeff Kang and Tosh Agassiz, the award-winning duo behind Canis, are finishing work on Cono Gelato, slated to open in Little Italy later this summer. In the Annex, Cremma Gelato, a new venture from the team behind Carolina, will join the rapidly expanding fleet at Mirvish Village this fall.
