Rescued cows at Farmhouse Garden Animal Home in Uxbridge are making abstract paintings with their tongues, and on Nov. 14 some of that work goes on show at The Lab, 108 Dundas St. W. Early-bird tickets for the 6 to 9 p.m. Event, called Cows on Canvas, start at $30.

Ticket and artwork proceeds go toward caring for the sanctuary's 21 cows, which is marking its 10th anniversary.

Fundraising and events coordinator Sarah Fay said the idea came from TikTok videos of dogs painting. "Cows are just big dogs. So, if dogs can do it, cows can do it too," she told reporters.

Each canvas is coated with paint, molasses and a plastic layer so the cows can use their tongues without taking in anything toxic. Art buyers receive a photo or video of the specific cow making their piece. Fay said her favourite artist is a cow named Terry Jane, whom she calls a "big meanie" who is nonetheless good at floral work.

The evening includes live music, food, and drinks, and videos of the cows at work on a screen. It happens Nov. 14 at The Lab.
