Fans built the setlist for Justin Nozuka's Toronto show, and "After Tonight" ranked first. Nozuka closes a month-long solo tour at the Opera House on Friday, Nov. 6, with doors at 7 p.m. And the show at 8 p.m. Local singer-songwriter Meaghan De Lima opens the hometown date.
The tour has been mostly in the United States, and Nozuka says the Toronto show is a homecoming. He is performing alone, but it is not a stool-and-guitar set. "It's definitely a production experience. It's not super stripped," he told reporters. He uses three cassette "chapters" and a looping chapter, and some songs are played with the guitar set aside and backed by tracks from the tape.
He built a "build your dream set list" tool on his website, and the songs people picked were pooled into a top-picks leaderboard that fans cannot see. He says the top 10 songs from the tool are all in the Toronto set.
The songs fans asked for most come from Holly, his 2007 debut, named after his mother. Nozuka is teasing an anniversary for the album, which turns 20 next year. He has not said what the anniversary will involve, and he has also released three EPs in the past year.
He has not said what the Holly anniversary will involve or when it will be announced. The Toronto show is Friday, Nov. 6, at 8 p.m.
What form will the Holly 20th-anniversary marking take, and when will it be announced?
Who built the fan-voted setlist tool with Nozuka, and will it return for later tours?
We'll update this story as answers emerge.
