Mississauga city council will vote Wednesday on a proposal to rename Indian Gate park after Toronto Police Service Const. Marc Pinizzotto, who was shot and killed while on duty last Thursday.
Mayor Carolyn Parrish said she learned the greenspace on Indian Road, just south of the Queen Elizabeth Way in the Lorne Park neighbourhood, was a favourite spot for Pinizzotto and his brothers growing up nearby. After speaking with his mother, Linda Pinizzotto, Parrish said the idea was welcomed.
"She was very emotional, and she was very thrilled," Parrish said Monday. The city plans to ensure there's a nice sitting area where people can contemplate and understand his contribution to public service.
Lincoln released a statement on Instagram calling her son a hero and an "incredible father, son, husband, coach and friend of many." She wrote: "His passing echoes deep inside us. Our loving family is shattered."
Ward 2 Coun. Alvin Tedjo said Marc's death has been "incredibly tragic" for the community, especially those who played hockey with him and the families he coached. Pinizzotto, a member of the Toronto Police Service's emergency task force, was investigating multiple shootings, including one at the U.S. Consulate in March, when he was shot at an apartment building on Martha Eaton Way in North York.
