Just over a year after walking 16 kilometres across half of TTC Line 1 from Finch to Union Station, Samantha Ruth and Amanda Gracia are tackling a longer challenge: the entire 30-kilometre length of Line 2, from Kennedy Station in Scarborough to Kipling Station in Etobicoke.
The pair went viral in 2025 when they stopped at every Line 1 station to take a selfie, documenting their journey online. This time, they're walking for a purpose. They're raising money for Out of the Cold Foundation, the largest interfaith volunteer food initiative in Toronto, which provides more than 900 hot meals and 400 bagged lunches a week to the community across a twice-weekly program operating 12 months a year.
They set a fundraising goal of $1,000, and they've already reached it before the walk even takes place. The $1,000 will help provide 200 hot meals to people in need. Ruth volunteers with Out of the Cold, while Gracia is a registered dietitian who works at a hospital.
"Something that's really near and dear to both Amanda and I is the food bank and fighting food insecurity in Toronto," Ruth said. "I volunteer for OOTC, and it's just been one of the best choices I've made ever since moving to Toronto, to be able to feed our neighbours and talk to the people and see what they need in terms of food and housing."
The duo has learned from last year. Gracia noted that the eastern stretch of Line 2 could take close to two hours between some stations, so they decided to start at Kennedy heading toward Kipling to tackle the hardest part first and maintain morale. They're packing water, electrolytes and snacks, plus a power bank to keep their devices charged. They plan a lunch stop in Koreatown near Christie Station, where they expect to be ready for a proper break.
"We reached $1,000 in terms of donations. But if anybody wants to still contribute, I think it's still open," Gracia said. Those interested in donating or following their journey can reach out through their social channels.
