Taste of the Danforth is returning to Danforth Avenue this summer after being cancelled for two consecutive years.
The Ontario government and the City of Toronto announced Thursday they will invest a combined $400,000 to revive the iconic festival. The one-time funding is expected to help organizers bring back the annual tradition that had left many Toronto residents wondering whether it would ever return, especially as other festivals were shuttered at an alarming rate.
The popular event, which typically takes place the second weekend of August, was cancelled in 2024 due to lack of funding; no explanation was provided for the 2025 cancellation. The festival generates nearly $100 million in tourism spending for Toronto and typically draws around one million people to the east-end neighbourhood over its three-day run, according to Ontario's Minister of Tourism, Culture and Gaming Stan Cho.
Every year, Taste of the Danforth transforms Danforth Avenue into a bustling pedestrian celebration packed with food, vendors, music, dancing and cultural events. The return is expected to be welcome news for local businesses, residents and longtime fans who spent the past two summers missing one of Toronto's most recognizable summer traditions.
Chow and Cho provided additional details about the festival at a press conference Thursday morning.
