Canadian women's soccer legend Christine Sinclair offered words of encouragement to the men's national team after they were eliminated from the FIFA World Cup with a 3-0 loss to Morocco on Saturday.

Canada made history by reaching the Round of 16 for the first time in men's World Cup history, following victories over South Africa (1-0) and Qatar (6-0) and a draw with Bosnia & Herzegovina (1-1). The team lost to Morocco in the knockout round.

"I've been in that huddle," Sinclair wrote on social media. "I know how heavy a loss like this feels, and I know that right now it's probably impossible to see anything beyond the disappointment. But with time, I hope this group will realize what they've truly accomplished.

"A new standard has been set for the Canadian men's program on the World Cup stage. They've inspired a generation of young Canadians to dream bigger. They've helped turn Canada into a soccer nation."

Sinclair, 43, represented Canada for 23 years, amassing 190 goals over 331 appearances. Despite her illustrious career, which included Olympic gold in 2021, she never won a FIFA World Cup, reaching the quarter-finals in 2015 and fourth place in 2003.

"One result will never define this team. Their impact on our game, on our country, and on the next generation will last far longer than today's score," she added. "Be proud. Canada certainly is."
