Fire crews responded to a three-alarm blaze at an industrial bakery on Carlingview Drive in Etobicoke on Thursday, July 16, just after 4:30 p.m., with no injuries reported.
Fire officials initially called the incident an oven fire but escalated it to a third alarm to bring in additional resources when heavy smoke and flames made their way to the roof. The complexity of fighting the fire—particularly the exterior conditions, extreme heat, and distance hoses had to be dragged—prompted the extra alarm.
All approximately 50 staff members in the building at the time of the fire managed to safely self-evacuate. Division Commander Robert Hewson noted the challenging conditions crews faced: "The heat and the air quality is definitely challenging, the distances that we're dragging hoses, and just the workloads. We do concentrate on watching our crews and cycling them, just to keep those work cycles lower and keep everybody healthy."
Fire crews were expected to remain on site for at least the next 24 hours as they continued to monitor for hot spots on the roof.
