General Motors will invest $144 million to add production of next-generation GMC Sierra heavy-duty trucks to its Oshawa Assembly plant under a new collective agreement with Unifor, marking a significant commitment to Ontario's auto manufacturing sector.
The three-year deal, details of which were released this weekend as workers began ratifying it, covers more than 4,600 unionized employees across GM's Canadian plants — Oshawa Assembly, CAMI Assembly in Ingersoll, St. Catharines Propulsion Plant, and Woodstock Parts Distribution Centre.
The agreement also includes a $215 million investment in St. Catharines for assembly of next-generation transmissions, expected to create 250 new jobs and position that plant as the single-source supplier for the component. For the idled CAMI plant in Ingersoll, GM has pledged in writing not to close or sell the facility as it searches for new production opportunities. The plant will receive first consideration for Canadian Armed Forces defence contracts if GM wins such work from the federal government.
The union negotiated an "innovative program" aimed at reducing layoffs in Oshawa after a third shift was shelved in January. Based on current demand forecasts, Oshawa Assembly is expected to operate on two shifts for the duration of the agreement.
Unifor is set to begin labour talks with Stellantis next amid mounting pressures on the auto sector, including U.S. tariffs and the introduction of Chinese electric vehicles into Canada.
