Ontario invests $55.8M to launch first family-doctor medical school at York University

Ontario is investing $55.8 million to establish York University's School of Medicine, the province's first medical school dedicated to training family doctors. The school is expected to open in 2028.

When it launches, York will have 80 undergraduate seats and 102 postgraduate seats, growing to 240 undergraduate and 293 postgraduate seats at full capacity. The investment will fund accreditation, curriculum development, faculty recruitment, a medical library, and operating costs for both programs.

York's community-based model aims to expand access to care across northern Toronto, York Region, Simcoe County, and Muskoka. This announcement is part of Ontario's largest medical education expansion in over a decade, which includes additional seats at all six existing medical schools and a second new school at Toronto Metropolitan University, which welcomed its first cohort last fall.

The province has committed to ensuring everyone who wants a primary care provider can access one. Minister of Health Sylvia Jones said the expansion will "support the primary care needs of our province for generations to come." York received an initial $9 million investment in 2024 to begin design and planning.
