Steel structural sections are taking shape over the active rail tracks at Exhibition Station as the first permanent construction work begins on a future multimodal transit hub that will connect GO Rail with the new Ontario Line subway.

The new 15.6-kilometre Ontario Line will run from this hub at Exhibition Station northeast to Line 5 Eglinton, with construction not expected to wrap up until the 2030s. Despite the early stage, passengers can already ride through the growing network of steel columns as trains continue through the corridor.

Permanent steel sections first appeared in May, and Metrolinx says more than 90 sets of "V-columns" will be installed over the course of the summer, setting the stage for work on the new multimodal concourse. Tunnelling recently launched just east of the growing Exhibition Station concourse building and will eventually forge an underground path from the new landmark through the downtown core before surfacing to cross the Don River and proceeding north below city streets. The route will emerge onto a massive bridge over the Don Valley and onto an elevated guideway into Thorncliffe Park.

Metrolinx has shared time-lapse video highlighting the rapid assembly of these permanent structures, demonstrating the pace of work even as passenger trains zip through the growing network.
