The federal government launched public consultations Monday on the future of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, entering a three-way debate over whether the island facility should be expanded to handle larger aircraft.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford's government recently passed legislation to take over the City of Toronto's role in governing the airport. That shifted control from a tripartite agreement between the city, the feds, and the Toronto Port Authority—a federal agency—to one between the province, the feds, and the port authority.

Ford wants to expand the airport to accommodate jets. Prime Minister Mark Carney has said he's open to consultations on the proposal, and Transportation Minister Steven MacKinnon and Toronto Liberal MPs have been cautious publicly.

Transport Canada is asking Canadians to weigh in on noise, environmental concerns, economic impact, and quality of life in nearby communities. The public can submit feedback online or by mail until July 24. The department says responses will shape the federal government's decision on whether the expansion moves forward.

For Toronto residents, the debate hinges on whether the airport should stay as it is—a regional hub for short-haul flights—or grow into something bigger. The federal input period is the next real checkpoint.

This is Ottawa's chance to hear what Torontonians actually think before the province and the feds decide the island's future.
