Richie Laryea's most memorable moment from Canada's historic 2026 FIFA World Cup run didn't come during the country's biggest win. It came right here in Toronto.

The Toronto FC defender appeared in all five matches for Canada's men's national team during the tournament, helping the country reach the Round of 16 for the first time. While many would have chosen Canada's victory over South Africa as their highlight, Laryea points to the opening match at Toronto Stadium (BMO Field) against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Canada fell behind early on a set piece before storming back in the second half. Cyle Larin, another Toronto native, scored the equalizer—Canada's first goal of the home World Cup. "For Cyle to score and me to hear the crowd's energy, it was cool to see," Laryea said. "For us both being from here, there were so many emotions behind that."

The 31-year-old has called Toronto FC home since 2019 and now ranks tied for seventh in franchise history with 156 appearances. His best World Cup performance came in front of his family and friends: he recorded his only shot on target of the tournament and won four of four tackles against Bosnia. Laryea has since rejoined Toronto FC for the second half of the 2026 MLS season, where the team sits two wins shy of playoff contention.
