Ontario is raising speed limits on 938 kilometres of highways, making driving faster but also riskier for some.
Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria announced the increases at a news conference in King City on Wednesday, June 24. Sections of Highway 401 and 416 in eastern Ontario will see the new 110 km/h limit take effect June 27. Other stretches of Highway 401, 402, 403, 416, 417, and the Queen Elizabeth Way will transition by September 30.
Sarkaria said the province has already increased limits on 876 kilometres of highway over previous years and framed the newest increase as a step to improve travel times. "This work is critical to improve travel times for families, commuters and workers and will benefit millions of drivers," he said.
The minister claimed drivers will save 20 minutes on the Sarnia-to-Toronto route and nearly 30 minutes on the Toronto-to-Ottawa run with the higher speeds. The increases come as a Reddit staff report shows Toronto saw a significant uptick in speeding after cameras were removed from city streets.
