Toronto transit riders saved $1.8 million in September, the first full month of the TTC's new monthly fare cap, which gives riders unlimited travel after 47 paid trips in a calendar month.

Nearly 60,000 riders reached the threshold in September and claimed 595,000 free trips. The cap works automatically—no signup required—but riders must tap the same payment method (PRESTO card, debit card, credit card or mobile wallet) throughout the month. Switching payment methods resets the counter.

TTC CEO Mandeep S. Lali said in a statement that "monthly fare-capping is putting money back into our customers' pockets and making transit more affordable for the people who rely on the TTC most."

The fare cap was part of Mayor Olivia Chow's 2026 budget. Starting September 1, the agency also discontinued Youth, Adult and Senior monthly passes, as well as Youth and Senior 12-month passes. The Adult 12-month and TTC Post-Secondary monthly passes remain available. The single adult fare has been frozen at $3.50 for a third consecutive year.

Chow has promised a tighter weekly cap if she's re-elected on October 26—a 10-ride weekly cap that would give free rides after 10 paid trips per week, working similarly to the monthly version and kicking in automatically.
