Vladimir Guerrero Jr. placed on injured list with concussion after collision at third

The Toronto Blue Jays placed Vladimir Guerrero Jr. on the seven-day injured list August 16, due to a concussion sustained Friday night during a collision with Yankees shortstop George Lombard Jr.

The incident occurred during the sixth inning at third base on a chaotic play. With Guerrero at first and Nathan Lukes at second, George Springer hit a grounder to third. After the force-out at second, the throw went to first but first baseman Luis Garcia Jr. could not handle it. Guerrero broke for third, and Garcia's throw toward Lombard got away as Lombard tried to leap over the sliding Guerrero. Lombard's left knee struck Guerrero's head, knocking his helmet off.

Despite the impact, Guerrero got up and ran home to score the tying run, though he appeared dazed after crossing the plate. Manager John Schneider said Guerrero had "a little bit of a headache" after the collision and the decision to remove him was precautionary.

The franchise star, who signed a 14-year extension with Toronto in 2025, has struggled at the plate this season. In a corresponding move, the Blue Jays called up outfielder Daz Cameron and designated right-handed reliever Lazaro Estrada for assignment. The Jays won Friday's game 3-1.
