West Coast Pipeline Faces Lingering Questions

Route, carbon capture plans remain unclear as Alberta and Ottawa push forward with energy pact.

The Alberta-Canada energy pact signed earlier this month includes momentum toward a West Coast pipeline, but major questions remain unanswered. The route isn't finalized. The carbon capture component is vague. The timeline is uncertain. Those gaps matter because every detail affects whether the project survives public and Indigenous consultation.

Calgary Herald business columnist Jeffrey Varcoe notes that while there's political will behind the deal, the engineering and political logistics are enormously complex. A pipeline through B.C. faces environmental review, Indigenous consultation, provincial approval, and federal oversight. Past projects have foundered on smaller obstacles.

For energy sector workers and companies in Calgary, the project represents potential investment and jobs. For B.C. residents and First Nations, it raises environmental and economic questions. The engagement process will take months. By then, external factors—global energy prices, federal politics, Indigenous litigation—could shift the calculus entirely.

The pact is a start, not a finish line.
