Surrey Drivers Push Boundaries at Four-Way Stops

Letter highlights dangerous 'rolling stops' becoming routine in South Surrey intersections.

A South Surrey resident's plea to fellow drivers is raising an uncomfortable truth: four-way stops in the region have become more like suggestions than rules, with "rolling stops" becoming routine enough that some drivers apparently expect to get away with it.

The incident that sparked the letter was straightforward but illustrative. A driver came to a complete halt at a four-way intersection, looked both ways, and began to proceed—only to have a brown pickup truck approaching from the left blow straight through without stopping, forcing a hard brake to avoid collision. The offending driver, confident in both his timing and his interpretation of traffic law, offered an obscene hand gesture and carried on.

What makes this noteworthy isn't just the single incident—it's the pattern behind it. Across South Surrey, drivers are treating four-way stops as yield signs, rolling through at minimal speed and banking on timing rather than full compliance. Insurance claims, near-misses, and actual collisions have followed.

The issue reflects a broader Surrey traffic culture that residents and safety advocates have flagged for years. Speeding, aggressive lane changes, and now systematic four-way-stop violations suggest enforcement and public education aren't matching the problem's scale. Until drivers internalize that "stop" means stop—not "slow down and check"—South Surrey's intersection safety will remain compromised.
