VPD won't patrol Vancouver beaches this summer
After parks funding cuts, police say officers will respond to calls but will not actively patrol city beaches during peak season.
The Vancouver Police Department will not conduct active patrols at any city beaches this summer, citing funding cuts to the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation.
Constable Megan Lui confirmed that while police will respond to emergency calls from beaches, they will not station officers for routine patrols. The reduction comes as part of broader budget constraints affecting park and recreation services across the city.
The decision affects all Vancouver beaches during what's typically the busiest season for water-based activities. With schools out and warm weather expected to drive visitors to waterfront areas, the loss of visible police presence may alter how residents perceive safety during summer outings.
Police will still deploy resources reactively to reported incidents, but the shift away from preventative patrols represents a material change in service delivery. Residents who frequent beaches may want to travel in groups and remain aware of their surroundings.
