6 Calgary donut shops worth the detour this week
From artisan dips to made-to-order flavours, here are the best spots to celebrate National Donut Day on Friday.
National Donut Day arrives Friday, June 5, and Calgary has plenty of reasons to celebrate beyond the Krispy Kreme drive-thru.
Jelly Modern Doughnuts leads with artisan-dipped and filled donuts in sophisticated flavours — think peanut butter cup dipped in chocolate ganache, filled with peanut cream, and topped with salted peanuts. They have two locations: 100 1414 8th St. SW and at Calgary Farmer's Market, 510 77th Ave. SE.
Doughnut Party, with two YYC locations (1125 9th Ave. SE and 2205 33rd Ave. SW), rotates monthly flavours including the Feather Boa with hibiscus and coconut, or the Fritter with rhubarb, apple, cardamom and rosewater.
Glamorgan Bakery, at 19-3919 Richmond Rd. SW, has been serving donuts for over 40 years — jellies, long johns, massive Texas donuts, and donut holes. Pretty Sweet YYC (536 42nd Ave. SE) makes custom donuts to order in full, medium, or mini sizes: strawberry, root beer float, vanilla bean, sour watermelon, and more.
Hoopla Donuts brings the Phil and Sebastian pedigree to multiple locations across the city, with dozens of flavours like lemon curd, horchata old-fashioned, and cereal and milk. Dough Boy, the newer arrival at 4140 6th St. NE, twists market-style donuts fresh and hot, finished with everything from dark chocolate and pistachio to maple syrup and crushed Oreo.
