A&W Launches First Smash Burger Across Canada

A&W is jumping into the smash burger craze. Starting May 25, the Canadian burger chain will roll out its first-ever smash burger coast-to-coast—a hand-smashed beef patty (single or double) topped with real cheddar cheese, tangy pickles, sliced onions, and a house-made sauce on a toasted brioche bun.

Smash burgers have been the trend's trend for three years now. The technique—pressing a beef patty hard onto a hot griddle to create a deep, caramelized crust—produces a burger that's crispy on the outside, juicy inside, and flavour-packed in a way traditional thick patties can't match. A&W's entry into the category signals the method has moved from trendy burger bars into mainstream quick-service territory.

Karan Suri, Senior Director of Innovation at A&W Canada, emphasized the execution: "Hand-smashed burgers are rarely done at this scale because it takes quality ingredients and thoughtful execution. Each hand-smashed, juicy, grass-fed beef patty is paired with real cheddar cheese, tangy pickles, and our signature sauce for a perfectly balanced bite."

The burgers are available for a limited time, meaning A&W is testing the waters before deciding whether to keep them on the menu long-term. Torontonians get first dibs: A&W is transforming a downtown Toronto location (780 King St. W.) into a smash-burger pop-up on Friday, May 22, from noon to 5 p.m., where early adopters can grab a free Double Smash Burger while supplies last. For Calgary, the launch date is May 25 at all locations. If the burger sticks (and early indicators suggest it will), this could be A&W's answer to the five-dollar smash-burger arms race.
