Two Calgary Restaurants Close After Years in the Scene
Pablo Cheese Tart and Jin Bar both shuttering this month, marking another shift in the city's dining landscape.
Calgary's restaurant scene is losing two beloved spots this month. Pablo Cheese Tart, the Osaka-based Japanese bakery that's been serving creamy, inventive cheese tarts since 2021, is closing its only Canadian location at 602B 16th Ave. NW this week. Jin Bar, the Bridgeland staple known for bold Asian-inspired cuisine, will have its final service on May 30 after five years.
These aren't corporate chains—they're the kinds of places that built loyal followings, hosted celebrations, and became part of neighborhood identity. Pablo's customers developed a devoted fan base around its unique tart flavours, while Jin Bar became a destination for anyone craving thoughtful, innovative Asian food in a neighbourhood that's becoming increasingly foodie-focused.
The closures reflect broader pressures on independent restaurants: operating costs, staffing challenges, and changing consumer behaviour all play roles. Both teams acknowledged their communities' support in closing announcements—Jin Bar's team called their customers part of "Calgary's dining community," and that kind of gratitude feels genuine, not corporate.
For diners, it's a reminder to visit the places you love while they're still there. These restaurants won't be replaced by identical copies; they'll just be gone. That's what makes each closure sting a little.
