Gordon Lightfoot may have passed away in 2023, but his spirit lives on in John Paul Byrne's "If You Could Read My Mind: The Gordon Lightfoot Tribute Show," returning to the Polaris Theatre on June 25.

The tribute has been called Canada's truest and most authentic Gordon Lightfoot experience and has earned endorsement from the legendary singer's former bandmates. Byrne, originally from Lethbridge and acclaimed for writing INK: The Musical!, developed a deep love for Lightfoot's work decades ago. "My friend turned me on to Gordon Lightfoot when I was back in Lethbridge. I really got turned on to him when I was about 21 or 22," Byrne explains. "I would just sing to my kids every night. A lot of times it was Gordon Lightfoot."

After decades in publishing, Byrne decided to create a tribute to his musical hero. What began as a smaller-scale post-COVID affair in 2022 quickly garnered praise for its musical authenticity and emotional depth, drawing comparisons to Lightfoot's original performances. Byrne's golden tones bear an uncanny resemblance to Lightfoot's in his prime.

Byrne was deliberate about not tampering with perfection. "I think that voice is one of the greatest male voices on the planet," he says. "His uniqueness—he took folk to a kind of new level, it's almost like its own category. He experiments and writes deep and beautiful lyrics, beautiful poetry, and brings them all together through fantastic chord progressions and the most amazing melodies."

Lightfoot remains a Canadian legend whose songs transcend generations with their universality. Byrne believes the enduring appeal rests on the music itself. "True Lightfoot fans will go a long way to hear them, and to hear our tribute show to him," he says.

Those attending June 25 can expect a transcendent musical experience delving deeply into Lightfoot's moving catalogue. "He's a world legend for a singer-songwriter—the best that the world has ever produced. Yes, I may be biased because I'm Canadian, but he was absolutely Canadian in everything he did," Byrne says.

Tickets are on sale through the Polaris Theatre website at polariscentre.ca. The tribute also plays Lethbridge at THE PLACE on June 26 and Creston's Kootenay River Theatre on June 28.
