Racers are returning to the Millarville Run to the Farmers' Market this weekend for the first time in two years.
Following a one-year hiatus, the half-marathon returns Saturday, June 20 with 21 km, 10 km, 5 km, and the COBS cinnamon bun 'bunner' divisions. All finishers cross the line at Millarville Racetrack, which kicks off the 44th season of the Millarville Farmers' Market.
"It's the only run I can think of that finishes in the grand opening of a farmers' market," said Tom Bamford, race organizer. "That's a pretty wonderful place, it's a very scenic route with quiet roads and beautiful country scenery for the athletes."
Bamford, who runs Platinum Racing, took over organizing the event. The run last took place in 2024 as its 11th annual iteration. The Millarville Racing and Agricultural Society cited a refurbishment of the volunteer organizing committee as reason for the pause.
Organizers are expecting north of 800 participants. The out-and-back course runs through country roads south on 192nd Street, east on 338th Avenue, and south on 176th Street to the turn around just north of Diamond Valley.
Race times begin at 8 a.m. for the 21 km, 8:30 a.m. for the 10 km, and 9 a.m. for the 5 km. Road closures will be in place from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. with only local traffic allowed. Those driving to spectate can access the racetrack west from Highway 549 and north/south from Highway 22.
The run supports the Rowan House Society, which will have volunteers stationed along the route. The busy weekend also includes the Chinook Classic cycling race on Sunday, June 21, and the debut of the KinFest Music Festival at the racetrack from June 19-21.
