The Town of Okotoks will mark National Indigenous Peoples Day on Sunday, June 21, with a pipe ceremony at the Okotoks Municipal Centre from 10 a.m. to noon.

During the ceremony, participants will make an offering to the creator through smoking the pipe and praying to continue to be kind to each other, responsible stewards of the land, and good friends and neighbours.

National Indigenous Peoples Day takes place annually on June 21 and is a day for Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures, and outstanding contributions of Indigenous people. For generations, many Indigenous people and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day due to the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.

The ceremony was originally planned for Ethel Tucker Centennial Park but was moved to the municipal centre due to rain expected in the forecast.
