Kids in Okotoks will race handmade carts down Crystal Ridge Drive this Saturday in the 36th annual Rotary Club of Okotoks Soap Box Derby—one of the region's most colourful summer traditions.

The event runs Saturday, June 6, with cart inspection and practice time on Friday evening. Racing begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, with participants aged 8 to 14 competing down the hill between Downey Road and North Railway Street.

Last year, more than 100 racers took part, most sporting elaborate kits and costumes. The fastest carts cross the course in just over 30 seconds. Each participant will race at least five times.

Beyond the Soap Box Cup awarded to the fastest time, prizes go to most creative cart, best paint job, most original costumed driver, and most enthusiastic driver.

If weather forces a postponement, the rain-out date is Sunday, June 7. More information is available at okotoksrotary.ca.
