Okotoks youth with a need for speed returned Saturday for the 36th annual Rotary Club of Okotoks Soapbox Derby, racing nearly 100 custom-built carts down Crystal Ridge Drive between Downey Road and North Railway Street.
Competitors aged 8 to 14 competed in heats of four, with each racer getting up to five runs to clock their fastest time. The Soap Box Cup went to the fastest heat finisher, but the real spectacle was in the creativity. Carts featured a sprawling array of pop culture tributes — a Dumb and Dumber-style sheep dog van, a Back to the Future DeLorean, a Top Gun jet, and rigs decked out in Taylor Swift, SpongeBob SquarePants and Seattle Seahawks themes. Giant cats and chicken coops rolled down the hill alongside more aerodynamic entries.
Beyond the speed competition, prizes were awarded for most creative cart, best paint job, most original costumed driver and most enthusiastic driver.
The event draws families from across the region each June and has become a signature summer tradition for Okotoks. The combination of engineering ingenuity, theatrical costume, and genuine thrills makes it a day where younger racers get to blend mechanics with showmanship.
