Airdrie Canada Day parade feedback splits residents over temporary downtown route

Airdrie council accepted a presentation on Canada Day and Santa Claus parade routes on September 1, including results from an informal social media survey that revealed mixed resident sentiment about the 2026 parade reroute.

For many years, the Canada Day Parade followed a traditional route through downtown — starting at Allen Street and 1st Avenue, south on Main Street, and northeast on Allen Street, making the loop. This route provided a recognizable community gathering space, broad spectator viewing, established staging procedures, and the parade experience residents had come to expect.

In 2026, Main Street rehabilitation work forced a temporary reroute. The parade started at 1st Avenue and Allen Street, went west on Centre Avenue, north on Main Street, and east on Jensen Drive, terminating at Town and Country Centre. The shortened route could not accommodate large floats, marching bands, or horses — which had been part of the parade for years.

Only 106 residents participated in the informal social media survey, but their feedback was telling. When asked what was the best part of their parade experience, 46 per cent said the horses, which were not part of the parade this year. Twenty-four per cent cited the floats, 26 per cent said community togetherness, and 13 per cent said they didn't have a best aspect. Critically, 31 per cent of respondents complained about the route itself.

The revised route was treated as a temporary measure, and organizers committed to evaluating its effectiveness after the event. For 2026, the Santa Claus Parade will proceed on its traditional route, running from Fletcher Park down 6th Avenue and Main Street past City Hall, ending at Ridgeway Way. Main Street remediation work is scheduled to be completed by end of August and should have no impact on the Santa Claus Parade.

However, community feedback suggests the Santa Claus Parade route should also change. Residents raised concerns about parking, washrooms, accessibility, and other logistical issues. The Airdrie Parade Committee is eager to begin planning the next parade and posting opportunities for float participation.

City administration believes it's an appropriate time to undertake a holistic review of community parades and their role within the city. The review will assess both short and long-term parade routing options, considering current roadway configurations, anticipated population growth, future capital construction projects, transportation network changes, and redevelopment initiatives. The administration and the Airdrie Parade Committee will identify route options that balance public safety, operational efficiency, community expectations, emergency access requirements, and long-term city-building goals.
