Airdrie's population has surged from about 30,000 two decades ago to more than 90,000 today, and a new health centre under development aims to meet that demand. Covenant Health and the Alberta government are building the Airdrie Covenant Health Centre just north of Calgary, with an expected opening in 2031.
The project has two main components. The Urgent Care and Birthing Centre is projected to handle roughly 1,000 births annually and 30,000 urgent-care visits a year, providing non-life-threatening urgent care and maternal services. The Primary Surgical and Ambulatory Care Centre is expected to perform about 10,000 surgical procedures annually and deliver outpatient services.
The Alberta government is funding construction and land purchase for the urgent-care and birthing facility. Covenant Health will develop the surgical and ambulatory centre and work with provincial ministries to plan services based on current and future demand. The project is the first phase of a broader Covenant Wellness Community designed to bring multiple health and wellness services together in one place.
The total cost of the facility was not disclosed, nor was a specific address provided beyond "north of Calgary." Timeline for subsequent phases has not been announced.
