Airdrie is getting a major recreation upgrade with City Council approving accelerated construction of a $230 million multi-purpose facility that will now open as one complete project instead of in phases.
The SW Recreation Centre will include a pool and aquatics areas, a fitness centre, a family activity zone, arenas, a fieldhouse, a gymnasium, and a public indoor running track. Under the original plan, these amenities would have opened over several years. The updated single-phase approach will see the full facility open in 2030.
"This decision reflects Council's strategic focus on delivering long-term infrastructure that supports Airdrie's growth and enhances community well-being," said Mayor Heather Spearman. "By accelerating the SW Recreation Centre, we are providing high-quality recreation spaces sooner, helping residents stay active, connected and supported as our community continues to grow."
By moving forward with single-phase construction instead of multiple phases, the City expects to reduce construction time, improve efficiency, and save between 6.4 and 8.6 per cent in construction costs. The project is moving into the detailed design phase, with construction expected to begin in 2027.
