Bridgeland Main Street construction wraps by end of August after multiple years

The Bridgeland Main Street project will wrap up by the end of August, capping years of construction and street closures along First Avenue N.E.

The work replaced underground infrastructure including storm water lines, street lighting, electrical and telecommunications systems. Crews widened sidewalks, added landscaping, and upgraded public spaces. Some finishing work and landscaping will continue through September.

Local business owners said the construction was necessary but difficult. Melanie Aikenhead, owner of Inglewood Art Supplies, said staff spent much of the project apologizing to customers struggling to reach the store. "It's nice to get a new facade of the street, with some trees added," she said. Tiana Hope from Atticus Tattoo reported that clients didn't know where to find parking or how to get there, especially during the busy summer season.

Peter Yee, construction project manager, said the long-term benefits justify the disruption. "Those projects help to create a safer, more accessible, more vibrant main street with wider sidewalks, enhanced public spaces, landscaping, as well as improved connections that will support residents, visitors, and local businesses for many years to come," he said.

The project is the final phase of the Bridgeland Main Street revitalization. Both business owners said they're looking forward to the reopening.
