Construction on the Highway 1A and Highway 22 interchange west of Calgary has wrapped its main phase, with temporary speed limits removed and permanent signage installed on Friday, July 17, 2026.
The three-year project, which began in May 2023, expanded Highway 1A from two to four lanes west of Highway 22 to 6th Avenue and built two new bridges on Highway 1A over Big Hill Creek. It also replaced the Highway 22 CP Rail overpass over Highway 1A with a new larger overpass structure, and created new interchange ramps and roundabouts connecting Highways 1A and 22.
Permanent speed limits now reflect the original pre-construction zones: 60 km/h through the main interchange site and junctions on both highways, 80 km/h further west on Highway 1A toward Heartland and further north on Highway 22 toward Sunset Ridge, and 50 km/h approaching downtown Cochrane. Final landscaping and deficiency work will continue through the rest of July, and localized speed reductions to 50 km/h may be put in place during future lane closures or roadside work. Construction zone signs will remain until all work is complete.
