The City of Calgary has unveiled the design concept for Kingsland Park, a new greenspace being built on the former Kingsland School site in the southwest, revealing plans for diverse recreation amenities aimed at serving both local and city-wide needs.

The proposed redesign includes a toddler play area, a natural and inclusive playground, a teen zone, a fitness area, and a mixed court alongside a bookable artificial turf field with bleachers and lighting. The plan also incorporates new washrooms, seating areas, and open flexible space for picnics, gatherings, and play. The city intends to plant additional trees to "create a greener, more comfortable park."

The site was designated as park space in 2024 after the school closed. Since then, the city has worked through a phased process to understand how the park could best serve the community. That process began with a temporary pop-up park in summer 2024, followed by a "Discover Phase" that included public engagement to gather feedback.

The project completed its "Explore Phase" in April and May 2026, when preliminary design concepts were shared with the public for further input. Strong community interest emerged around a garden, though the city said it will require further exploration, including developing a community-led stewardship and operating model.

The project is now moving into the detailed design phase this fall, expected to take 11 to 15 months. Construction is set to move forward once funding is approved. More information is available on the city's website.
