Martin Family Legacy Garden opened today at Southview Park, marking Canada's first dementia-inclusive public park. Located at 3425 26th Ave. SE, the space features sensory gardens, colourful pathways, a children's playground, wide walkways, colour-coded routes, flat terrain, natural barriers, additional seating, and shaded areas — all designed with input from researchers, health-care professionals, community advocates, and families with dementia experience.
The groundbreaking happened in May 2025. Today's opening coincides with World Alzheimer Day, a global observance marking dementia awareness.
The park sits adjacent to Greater Forest Lawn 55+ Society and Bethany Riverview, positioning it to enable programming with nearby residents living with dementia. The goal is to create an outdoor space where people with dementia, caregivers, and visitors can spend time together. Admission is free.
