McDonald's opening on Kensington's 10th Street draws mixed reaction from neighbours

McDonald's is coming to Kensington, and the news has sparked debate about the neighbourhood's evolving character.

A McDonald's franchise is set to open at 273 10th Street N.W., in a space most recently occupied by Seoul Cafe, a Korean cafe that closed in 2025. Franchisee Marco Crimi confirmed the arrival in a LinkedIn post last week and told reporters the restaurant will open in late 2026 or early 2027, creating approximately 50 jobs.

"As a local McDonald's franchisee, I'm excited to continue investing in the community I call home with the planned opening of our newest restaurant," Crimi said, noting his career trajectory from crew member to owner of multiple franchises.

But the arrival has generated concern on local Reddit threads. Long-time business owner Lech Wojakowski, who runs The Roasterie coffee shop on 10th Street — operating since 1985 — questions the decision. "I think it's probably the wrong demographic," he said. "I don't see people from this area as McDonald's customers, but it will definitely change things up. I think we can explore other ideas, but it's something that probably wouldn't happen in Inglewood. It's just not the place for it."

The Kensington Business Improvement Area said it does not control which businesses landlords lease to. "The Kensington BIA's mandate is to support economic development through promotion and marketing, improve and maintain public spaces, and work collaboratively with the city," wrote executive director Gwyneth Midgley. She added that Kensington has always been a mix of franchises, locally owned chains, and independent storefronts. "The BIA's role is to support all businesses operating within the district once they are established here," she said.
