Corb Lund is coming to Okotoks on Monday for one of the final chances to sign the Water Not Coal petition before the June 10 deadline. The folk-country musician has been traveling across Alberta since February collecting signatures to protect the Eastern Slopes from new coal development.
The petition asks whether people support legislation that would prohibit new coal mines or expansion of existing coal mines in the eastern slopes of Alberta. Volunteers need 177,732 signatures to be successful.
Lund will be at the Okotoks Recreation Centre from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m., picking up completed petition sheets, thanking volunteers, and giving one last opportunity for residents to add their names. He'll also be in High River earlier that evening, from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. in front of the town's administration building.
Organizers say coal mining in the Eastern Slopes poses an environmental risk to water quality downstream of mines. While some proposed mines wouldn't directly impact High River, Okotoks or Calgary, developing them could open the door to future mining projects in the headwaters of the Highwood, Sheep and Elbow rivers — all critical water sources for the region.
The Last Chance Tour includes other stops in Lethbridge, Airdrie and Olds before the petition closes. This is a crucial final weekend for signature collection, with momentum building as the deadline nears.
