Albertans can start applying today for a $100 rebate the provincial government says will help with the high cost of living.

Premier Danielle Smith announced the payment in June as an alternative to reducing the province's fuel tax. The rebate is accessible to all eligible residents, whether they drive or not.

"The minister of finance took a look at these options, and we collectively decided that it would be better to do the rebate of these dollars, give more dollars to those who need it the most, and make sure that they're able to use it, according to their needs," Smith said.

Nearly 3.4 million adults are eligible. Applications will be accepted from July 1 to September 30. The government says residents can expect the money to land in bank accounts within two weeks after applying.

The province officially changed its fuel tax relief regulations last week to make way for the payments.
