More than 106,000 Albertans had successfully applied for the $100 Energy Rebate through the online portal as of Thursday afternoon, despite technical problems affecting the application process.
Many applicants reported "Something went wrong" error messages, as well as issues with Alberta.ca account sign-in and the payment verification step, which uses Interac's Verification Service. Some users noted that banks, including ATB, were not appearing as options during the verification process, while others reported that selecting "My bank isn't listed" would only reload the page.
The province said it has corrected the sign-in issue and is reviewing the application process to identify further improvements. Jonathan Gauthier, press secretary for the Ministry of Technology and Innovation, noted that bank verification through Interac is available only to financial institutions that choose to participate.
"We recognize this step has been a source of frustration for some applicants," Gauthier said. Those whose banks do not participate can use the Document Verification option instead.
The province says most applicants can complete the process in under two minutes. Applications remain open until September 30, 2026. For assistance, Albertans can call the Alberta Energy Rebate hotline at 1-844-401-4014 or Alberta.ca account support at 1-844-643-2789.
