Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued severe weather alerts for Alberta today, with multiple risk zones affecting the province.

A high-risk zone hugs central Alberta and crosses into Saskatchewan, with areas including Red Deer and the QEII corridor facing the greatest threat. That zone could see wind gusts up to 110 kilometres an hour, hail up to six centimetres in size (baseball-sized), a tornado risk, and up to 50 millimetres of rain.

Calgary and Edmonton fall under a moderate weather risk, with potential for wind gusts up to 90 kilometres an hour, hail up to 4 centimetres (golf ball-sized), and around 30 millimetres of rain. Those heading to the Calgary Stampede should keep weather gear close at hand.

Elsewhere across the province, including Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, Hinton, Edson, High Level, Peace River, Banff, and Jasper, a lower-risk zone forecast includes wind gusts up to 70 kilometres an hour, hail up to 1 centimetre, and up to 20 millimetres of rain. Current weather watches and warnings are available on the ECCC website.
