Severe thunderstorms could bring hail, heavy winds to Alberta today
Environment Canada warns of multiple storm risk zones across the province Thursday and Friday, including Calgary.
Alberta is under threat of severe thunderstorms Thursday, with two moderate-risk zones highlighted by Environment and Climate Change Canada.
The first moderate risk spans the Foothills, where wind gusts could reach 90 kilometres an hour, hail up to 2.5 centimetres, and 40 millimetres of rain. The second moderate risk covers eastern Alberta including Lloydminster, with wind gusts up to 90 kilometres an hour, hail up to 3 centimetres, and potential for 50 millimetres of rain.
Calgary, Red Deer, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat are in a lower-risk zone but could still see storms with wind gusts up to 70 kilometres an hour and hail up to 2 centimetres. Edmonton appears to be in the clear.
Thunderstorm risk continues into Friday with another round of less intense storms bringing wind gusts up to 70 kilometres an hour, hail in the 1 to 2 centimetre range, and 20 to 30 millimetres of rain to Edmonton, Red Deer, Lloydminster, and Edson. A separate system Thursday night could affect Calgary, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, and Banff National Park with similar wind and hail.
