Bankview Electrical Fire Knocks Out Power to 80+ Residents
A transformer blaze on a power pole left the southwest Calgary neighbourhood without electricity early Wednesday morning.
An electrical fire at a power transformer left over 80 residents in Bankview without electricity Wednesday morning. Calgary Fire Department crews responded around 5:50 a.m. to the 2400 block of 17 Avenue SW, where the outdoor blaze was already visible on a utility pole.
"Crews arrived to an electrical fire of a transformer on a power pole," said CFD information officer Alex Kwan. The flames were contained to the transformer itself, but the risk of electrocution meant firefighters had to wait for Enmax—Calgary's power utility—to arrive and cut the main power feed before they could safely extinguish the fire.
The outage was localized to the immediate Bankview area and lasted several hours while crews worked and Enmax assessed damage to the distribution equipment. No injuries were reported. The transformer fire, while dramatic and disruptive, is not uncommon during spring storms and high-demand periods—aging grid infrastructure sometimes fails under stress.
Enmax will have replaced or repaired the transformer by now, but the incident serves as a reminder of how dependent urban neighbourhoods are on a small number of critical infrastructure nodes. One failed piece can darken blocks in minutes.
