A man died in custody as Calgary police arrested him following an alleged break-and-enter Saturday night, July 12, in the southeast community of Abbeydale.

Police responded to reports of a residential break-in at a home in the 0 to 100 block of Abbercove Road S.E. The suspect had fled before officers arrived but was located nearby. During the attempted arrest, the man became combative and did not comply with police directions. At least one officer deployed a conductive energy weapon.

After that, police say the man went into medical distress. He was transported to hospital, where he died. No one else was hurt in the interaction.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is now investigating, as it does for all deaths in police custody.
