Calgary Surge Struggles Out of Gate in New Basketball Season

The Calgary Surge basketball team has gotten off to a sluggish start in the Canadian Elite Basketball League, raising questions about their title prospects.

The Calgary Surge's 2026 season has been rough early, and there's no way around it. Starting slow in a competitive league like the Canadian Elite Basketball League means you're already chasing, and the Surge are feeling that pressure just a few weeks into the campaign.

A slow start doesn't necessarily predict how a season will finish—plenty of teams have turned it around from rough openings—but in a league where every game matters and the window to build momentum is narrow, losing ground early is never ideal. The Surge have the talent to compete, but talent doesn't win games if the team isn't operating on the same wavelength.

What's interesting is how Calgary's basketball community has responded. There's still patience in the stands, still belief that this team can right itself. Part of that comes from the reality that the CEBL is still relatively young as a professional league in Canada, and teams are still learning how to build sustainable winning cultures. The Surge have a foundation—now they need to execute.

The schedule won't get easier as the season progresses, so every game from here on becomes critical. If Calgary can find their rhythm in the next stretch of games, they could still position themselves well for the playoffs. But if the slow start drags into May and June, they'll be watching the postseason from home. The choice, as always, belongs to the players on the court.
