Cavalry FC have an uphill battle in their Canadian Championship quarterfinal against the Vancouver Whitecaps after a 4-1 loss in the opening leg on Wednesday night at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Cavalry conceded an own goal in the second minute but a Daan Klomp marker just before halftime had the Canadian Premier League side on even terms with its MLS counterpart after 45 minutes. Second half goals by Thomas Muller, Brian White and Rayan Elloumi sealed the win and gave the Whitecaps a commanding three-goal lead on aggregate heading into Monday's match.
The second leg of the quarterfinal takes place Monday, July 13 at Spruce Meadows' ATCO Field.
The Whitecaps, who received a bye in the opening round, are seeking their fifth straight Canadian Championship title. The two sides have a history in the competition as Cavalry eliminated the Whitecaps in 2019, while the Caps returned the favour in 2022.
Cavalry earned its quarterfinal berth this year with a 3-1 win over Pacific FC on May 9 on Vancouver Island.
